The Importance of Foot Skills for the Modern Day Goalkeeper

I always knew that the modern game called for more distribution than actual saves, but looking at the statistics (not just Matty Ryan’s), the numbers are staggering. On average, each goalkeeper is touching the ball 7-9x more with their feet than their hands.

As a coach, these stats are a great reminder that if you’re not working passing or distribution in each and every session, you’re failing your goalkeepers. Going to make sure that I add in pass-backs and touches more often in my sessions, not just as a warm-up or cool down
