Hey guys. So far too often I see goalkeepers shying away from a pass back.

Clip 1: You can see that Bendik doesn't show for the ball at all. He stays central and it allows the forward to only focus on the defender; making it a 1 vs 1 battle. In many cases the defender should just kick the ball out of bounds, but in this case, he does not and it leads to a goal. Instead, he should have shown to at the very least make the forward guess/decide which way to go. This causes indecision which could ha...

BREAKDOWN: Narrow vs. Wide Stance 🔊🔊 sound on!

CLIPS 1 & 2: In these 2 clips, Armando does a great job coming across and setting in a narrow stance. However, as the shot comes, he jumps into the air and shifts from a narrow to a wide stance; thus leaving him immobile and incapable of fluid lateral movements. What this does is it limits your ability to take a power step as well as get low to the ground.

CLIPS 3,4,5, & 6: In these clips, Notice how Armando comes across & sets into a narrow stance; as the shot comes, he still...

BREAKDOWN: Spin vs No Spin (When to Use Which Technique) SOUND ON 🔊🔊

CLIP 1: As you can see in this clip, Armando does the right thing by using the spin technique. The biggest indicator as to when to use the spin technique is if you have enough momentum from your legs to spin you around and back up to your feet. This is most commonly used when you're at MAX EXTENSION.

CLIP 2: In this clip, Armand is not at full extension, so he doesn't have to use the spin technique. Instead, all he has to do is engage his core and use t...

Things to Remember:

1. So as you can see, Franklin’s set position is too high to start. This position will have him playing catchup with the ball. As the ball is being hit, notice in the time it takes him to get low, the ball is already moving past him. This is causing him to dive backwards to make a play on the ball / make a save.

2. INSTEAD of doing this, he should have set lower and established a line where he would attack the ball with a lateral diagonal step to have positive or at le...

VIDEO BREAKDOWN: Diving Progression I'm breaking this one down because I know a lot of us coaches have kids who don't see the dive all the way through. Some kids have the tendency to drop their elbows down to break their fall. This can cause injury as well as a broken collarbone.

Clips 1 & 2: Harvey doesn't allow himself to go through the full progression of his dive. Instead, he stops himself early and lands directly on his elbow. So right away, we made sure to stop it and correct it. I was telling him that the easiest par...

VIDEO BREAKDOWN: Near Post Covering on Angled Shots

Things to Remember:

The way I was taught and how I continue to teach my students is that whenever you have a shot from the angle, ALWAYS set ONE STEP BEYOND THE NEAR POST.  This gives you more room for error. What I mean by that is if you were to get the slightest deflection on the ball and you were set level or behind the post, you're likely going to push the ball into the goal rather than wide. This step will also help you avoid diving into the post. HOWEVER, if you set o...

BREAKDOWN: Stepping into your Diving Space on a Low Ball Shot

Okay guys, so here's a great breakdown for any goalkeeper at just about any level! I wanted to cover the bad that comes from stepping into your diving space when you don't need to:

1. As you can see in the video, @Armando_samuel1 steps into his diving space with an unnecessarily big step. What you can see is that based on the shot that I hit, Armando should have taken a much smaller step. If the shot was hit a foot further out, this step would have been okay bec...

Wide vs Narrow Stance: Which is better?!

SOO, after studying different stances (Wide vs Narrow) and watching film on Armando, myself and a bunch of the pros, I have come to a conclusion; Wide or Narrow stance is the best if it is the best for YOU. One common theme that I found with both stances; wide or narrow, was that collapsing our power step inward helps us create that space that we need to allow us to get down and make a low ball save. Depending on how far the ball is placed in the corner will determine how much force...
